FREMONT, Neb. – This small Nebraska meatpacking town has joined Arizona at the center of a national debate about illegal immigration after voters approved a ban on hiring or renting property to illegal immigrants, but an expected court challenge could keep the measure from ever taking effect.
The American Civil Liberties Union already has promised to file a lawsuit to block enforcement of the proposal roughly 57 percent of Fremont voters supported Monday.
"In a community of 25,000, it's going to be hard to take on the whole country, and it will be costly to do so," said Fremont City Councilman Scott Getzschman, who opposed the measure but said city leaders would support the results.
Fremont's vote is the latest chapter in the tumult over illegal immigration across the country, including a recently passed Arizona law that will require police investigating another incident or crime to ask people about their immigration status if there's a "reasonable suspicion" they are in the country illegally.
The Fremont measure will require would-be renters to apply for a license from the city. Officials must refuse to issue a license to applicants found to be in the country illegally. The ordinance also requires businesses to use the federal E-Verify database to ensure employees are allowed to work.
The city, which is about 35 miles northwest of Omaha, has watched as its Hispanic population surged in the past two decades, largely due to the jobs

For the same reason members in Minnesota show up, at least to us, as O instead of MN, and folks in Nebraska show up as LA...ever heard of Minneapolis, O and Omaha, LA? Messaged SLS about the problem some time ago, they responded by telling us it wasn't a critical item....keeping things working properly for paying customers isn't a critical item? They're starting to sound like the cable company, LOL.

Obama Threatens Senator
The Washington Examiner is reporting that according to a Senate aide, Obama is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the Base Realignment And Closure (BRAC) list if Nelson doesn't fall into line.
While the Democrats appease Senator Lieberman, they still have to worry about other recalcitrant Democrats including Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Though Lieberman has been out front in the fight against the public option and the Medicare buy-in, Nelson was critical of both. Now that those provisions appear to have been stripped from the bill, Lieberman may get on board, but Nelson's demand that taxpayer money not be used to fund abortion has still not been met.
Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a "naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson's vote." They are "threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?" asked the Senate staffer.

"Sappy
"The issue of expansion of slavery into the territories was taken up and legislation regarding it was enacted in the Congress, e.g., Missouri Compromise the Great Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act. These acts created some states as slave states and some as free states, and the Supreme Court never struck down this legislation. "
Wrong! Congress power to prohibit slavery in the territories as laid out in The Missouri Compromise was declared unconstitutional. You'd think you'd know that.

Father abandons nine children at Neb hospital under 'safe haven' law

A father abandoned nine children last night at a hospital in Omaha. The children, who were left at Creighton University Medical Center under the provisions of Nebraska's "Safe Haven" law, range in age from 1 to 17, according to the Omaha World-Herald.
Under the new law, anyone who drops a child off at a hospital can't be prosecuted.
"The safe haven law was intended to protect unwanted newborns, but Nebraska's law does not set an age limit on children who can be left at hospitals," the paper says. "Many have interpreted that to mean children up to age 19 can be dropped off."
Kathie Osterman, a spokeswoman for the state's Department of Health and Human Services, tells the Associated Press that they're not sure why the father left his children in the emergency room.
Officials are scheduled to hold a news conference later today. We'll update this posting if we learn more.

"The 170-page report accuses Mr. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other top officials of repeatedly overstating the Iraqi threat in the emotional aftermath of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Its findings were endorsed by all eight committee Democrats and two Republicans, Senators Olympia J. Snowe of Maine and Chuck Hagel of Nebraska."
